Caring for your Stoneware
When you investing in handmade ceramics you want to ensure that your piece lasts as long as possible. Stoneware is noted for it's durability and will often be paired with some beautiful glazes. To maintain the functionality and appearance of your item, it's important that you take the required care for your piece. We have provided some guidance below to help you.
Storage
Your handmade ceramics should be stored in a cool dry place away from sunlight and placed away with care. This will prevent fading and any cracking or chipping. Do not stack handmade items on one another and be careful with textured clay as the rough nature of the clay may damage other pieces it touches. For decorative pieces consider dusting routinely and avoid using any harsh chemicals.
Daily Care
We always recommend handwashing your pieces with warm water and gentle dishsoap. It's important to remember handmade ceramics are delicate pieces and that although glazed stoneware is technically safe to be put in the dishwasher, dishwasher products could dull the glazes over time and the water pressure could knock the piece around causing physical damage.
Thermal Do's and Don'ts
Pieces designed for foodware will be tested for thermal shock as part of the measuring suitability for food. However all ceramics can be susceptible to thermal shock if heated up or cooled too quickly, causing your beloved piece to crack. You can reduce this by not putting your items in the microwave, the oven or the freezer or directly onto hot or cold surfaces.
